According to a bastardy bond of 5 May 1829 (in the state archives in Raleigh), RICHARD WHEELER was the father of ALFRED CHURCH.

When Alfred was a small child, his mother, RACHEL CHURCH, married ISHAM DANCY. Although Alfred lived with his mother and stepfather and their children, he apparently also stayed close to the Wheeler family. Alfred and the Wheelers migrated from Wilkes County, North Carolina, to Jackson County, Alabama, and after the early deaths of Alfred and his wife in the 1860s, two of their four children went to live with ANDREW LINSEY WHEELER and his family. Linsey (spelled Lindsey and Lindsay in some records -- he apparently spelled it Linsey) was one of Richard Wheeler's sons. Alford Wheeler, Richard's brother, was a neighbor of Alfred and Louisa Church in Rustic Bower, Alabama, in 1860.
